I offer workshops which involve such topics as creative communication, teambuilding, improvisation, relationships, addiction & recovery, emotional issues, meditation, spirituality. Below are some workshop descriptions.

CREATIVE COMMUNICATION and TEAMBUILDING WORKSHOP -- The most fun you’ll ever have improving group teamwork and communication. Featured exercises include “Yes, And!”, a brainstorming game; and “Two Person Letter”, to enhance listening skills. This workshop gets group members on their feet, laughing and learning, through the experience of spontaneous and fun interactive exercises, presented with simple, easy-to-follow directions. Each exercise is followed by a discussion, applying the experience to the group's purpose and goals.

CREATIVE COMMUNICATION for COUPLES -- Similar to the above workshop, but specifically designed for couples. Appropriate for couples who want to learn to have fun together again, or for those who want to enhance the joy they already experience together.

DYNAMICS OF ADDICTION & RECOVERY -- Explores the phenomena of addiction and recovery from a physical, psychological and spiritual standpoint; including brain chemistry research, tolerance, isolation, withdrawal and healing. Features a writing exercise exploring the group’s personal images of addiction and recovery. Another exercise highlights the difference between habitual negative actions and the embracing of healthy new behaviors.

EMOTIONAL AWARENESS/ ANGER MANAGEMENT GROUP FOR YOUTH/ ADULTS-- Not just for people who have a stereotypical “anger problem,” this workshop is for anyone who wants to work on the universal challenge of handling angry feelings. Incorporates interactive and entertaining communication games and role plays.

IMPROVISATION AND SPIRITUALITY WORKSHOP—Explores positive spiritual values through the use of interactive improvisation games. The games require saying “yes” to a spirit of generosity, acceptance, listening and co-operation.

MEN’S SEXUALITY WORKSHOP-- Men today are bombarded with sexual images--from the computer, TV, and billboards. What is the impact of society’s hyper-sexuality on daily lives, marriages and other relationships? What can you do if you or someone you care about is struggling with pornography, infidelity, prostitution or strip clubs?

These workshops reflect my experience as a licensed counselor and group leader, combined with my background in the creative arts — as a writer, improvisational performer, and teacher. As I maintain a supportive and safe group atmosphere, workshop members are invited to grow and learn through interactive participation in simple, easy-to-learn exercises.

CLIENT COMMENTS

"Ultimate Fun! We come from culturally diverse backgrounds and Joe's sense of humor and expertise had us learning and having fun before we knew it. We explored trust, open communication and the importance of teamwork. It definitely had a positive impact."
--Michelle Ferron, training manager, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii

"You did a great job of applying the principals of the theater games to enhance our academic and professional community. Most entertaining and insightful."
--Dr. George Kunz, Seattle University

"We train professionals to bring their own expertise to the table while respecting and valuing knowledge from other disciplines. Your workshop helped teach the importance of listening and attending to others while working together toward one goal. The team really enjoyed it. All told me it was a positive experience, even those who were initially hesitant."
--Gail Rowe, PhD, inter-disciplinary team leader, Seattle, Washington

"Your workshop opens up some rusted-shut doors in people's hearts and heads. I especially liked the 'celebration' of mistakes and the 'Yes, and' rather than 'Yes, but' game. When I remember to practice these simple exercises, my day is less chaotic."
--Tom Weston, S.J., retreat leader, Malibu, California

"We wanted to open up lines of communication amongst our staff and we did so in both an educational and recreational way. Afterwards, they wanted more."
--Warren Cohen, associate director of organizational development, Seattle

"Joe's workshop with our high schoolers was marvelous - he introduced us to the art of improv and drew even the most hesitant students into his creative exercises. Our evening together was a great team-building experience, and we laughed our heads off! I would recommend his services to any group."
--Steven Lympus, associate pastor, Seattle

“Joe’s trainings for our counseling staff have been invigorating, relevant and creative.”
--Jerry Evergreen, family counseling program manager, CHS, Shoreline

“I have co-led retreats with Joe since 1996. His workshops are always popular, combining fun exercises with interactive learning.”
--James Harbaugh, S.J., Pastor, St. Therese, Seattle

“Joe has led our members in activities ranging from a centering prayer class, to a youth improvisation workshop, to a discussion on sexuality at our men's retreat breakfast. Joe consistently combines knowledge and insight with humor and energy.”
--Dan Baumgartner, Pastor, Bethany Presbyterian Church, Seattle
